Lighting design for daylight, artifical light & greenwall lighting
The ALDI Campus in Essen is characterised above all by contemporary architecture, open structures, mobility and interdisciplinary exchange. The office complex consists mainly of open-space offices, co-working spaces and various communication hubs. To ensure maximum transparency, the majority of the building is glazed and has a night-time effect from a distance to the nearby A40 motorway. In addition, the campus has outdoor work areas, its own lecture hall, a staff restaurant and a fitness pavilion. The surrounding parklands and outdoor terraces as well as various relaxation areas invite you to linger. The centrepiece is the integrated plaza in the middle of the campus.
The design comes from the architect Jessica Borchardt from Hamburg (BAID Architektur GmbH). The team of Gerber Architekten was responsible for the implementation planning. We at KOBER LICHTPLANER were able to support the project in various topics and areas of daylight planning and artificial lighting planning:
Daylight planning plaza & entrance façade lighting
The glass roof of the central plaza poses special challenges for daylight planning and daylight management. We analysed the incidence of daylight as well as the daylight and glare effect over the entire course of the year with regard to targeted constructive sectioning and also any necessary printing of the lens for the desired degree of transmittance of a high level of visual comfort. An analogous approach was used for the entrance façade, on which, as a result of the analysis, a tailor-made shading system was implemented for the standard-compliant light of the workplaces at the reception.
Greenwall Lighting Plaza
Today, green walls or living trees in the interior are often a central component of modern foyers and have a strong visual and atmospheric influence on the perception of space. In the planning team, we calculated the incidence of daylight over the year based on the illuminance and spectra necessary for the biorhythm of the living plants and supplemented it with additional suitable artificial lighting. In view of the high height of the Greenwall, the light requirement for different height levels was determined and asymmetrically realized.
Accent lighting Plaza with artificial light
Accent lighting from great heights requires a lot of experience and precision. By selecting and arranging precision spotlights with scattered light reduction with darklight lighting technology and particularly high glare (cut-off), a subtle play of light-dark contrasts on the floor for a three-dimensional perception of the room could be achieved.

Exterior façade lighting
The ALDI Campus is located directly on the busy A40 motorway in the heart of the Ruhr region. Our concept of façade exterior lighting essentially accentuates only the parapet in a well-dosed way, in order to allow the building contour to appear against the night sky from a distance, but without emitting unnecessary scattered light into the night room
